New EU rules on nanomaterials cause controversy
By Guy Montague-Jones, 26-Mar-2009

The provisions for nanomaterials in the recast of the EU Cosmetics Directive have come in for criticism from campaigners.

In the run up to this week’s vote in the European Parliament, campaigners pushed for safeguards on nanomaterials to be added to the legislation.

The adopted regulation is now the first EU law to address nanomaterials and has been welcomed as “ground breaking” by Green MEP Hiltrud Breyer.

In a statement, Breyer said the vote marks a radical departure from the current EU Commission position, which has so far argued that existing legislation is adequate.

European consumer association BEUC also welcomed the regulation as an “important step” but voiced some reservations about the rules.

I guess peptides are good this week. Ultimately, I’m sure there are some that are effective, but not nearly as many as are hitting the market.

Sunburn May Play a Role in the Appearance of Rosacea
Offering another reason for proper sun care for the skin, a new study shows sunburn, as well as family history, may be a cause of rosacea.

New research suggests that people with the reddening skin condition rosacea tend to have a family history of the disease and a personal history of sunburns. Rosacea, a chronic condition that commonly affects the face and can also cause swelling and vascular abnormalities, affects roughly 14 million Americans. Its cause is unknown.

Pentapeptides are ineffective anti-ageing ingredients, says ASA
By Guy Montague-Jones, 05-Mar-2009

Scientific evidence does not show that pentapeptides are effective at reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, according to an ASA adjudication.

In a TV advert for Olay Regenerist skin cream containing pentapeptides a voice-over states that a study presented at the World Congress of Dermatology showed that the ingredients are effective in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

After receiving a complaint from a doctor challenging whether there was scientific evidence to support this claim, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) launched its own investigation.

The UK-based advertising watchdog scrutinized data submitted by Procter & Gamble (P&G), including a study published in the peer reviewed International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2005).

Injectable peptide could help regenerate the fat lost in ageing skin
By Katie Bird, 04-Mar-2009

An injectable peptide that helps induce the growth of fat under the skin could help plump up aging skin, according to researchers from the Berkeley Laboratory.

The technology might be able to replace dermal filler injections and cosmetic surgery procedures, says the company ProGDerm that is working to bring the science to market.

The peptide modulates the behaviour of the RHAMM protein (Receptor for Hyaluronan Mediated Motility) which was originally discovered during research into cancer cell mobility.
